Icom IC-706
Opinion
I bought one of these back when they first came out, somewhere around 1995. This version (the non-MkII/MkIIG) covers the HF bands, 6 meters and 2 meters. It makes 100 watts on the HF and 6m bands, and 10 watts on 2m. I don't remember how long I had it, but I sold it not all that much later. I found the interface just didn't really suit my tastes, and in spite of being a small radio for it's time, the control head was still kind of large.
In November of 2010 I had an urge to run 6 meter mobile in my Impreza. Already equipped with NMO antenna mounts for 2m/70cm, 220MHz and 900MHz, I decided to commandeer the 900MHz mount for a 6 meter Larsen antenna. A friend of mine lent me his 706, which I installed. The radio interface is as bad as I remember it :)
